Caring for patients like family: Meet Katie, RN and Breast Care Coordinator

Anyone who has experienced an uncertain medical diagnosis knows that the days between questions and receiving answers can feel the longest.

For patients facing a possible breast cancer diagnosis, having someone steady to walk that path with them makes all the difference. Katie Thiel, registered nurse and a breast care coordinator, takes on that role at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s - Ozaukee.

Katie joined Ascension in 2020 and started her career on a post-surgical floor at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s in downtown Milwaukee. There, she cared for patients recovering from a wide range of surgeries, including lumpectomies and mastectomies. That experience is what led her to the role she’s in today.

“Every time patients woke up, they were asking for their breast care coordinator,” Katie said. “They loved their nurse navigators and care coordinators and looked forward to seeing them. I remember thinking, that would be such an amazing job.”

Guiding patients through uncertainty

Katie supports patients from the moment something abnormal is found through biopsy, diagnosis and next steps, including surgery. When follow-up imaging is needed after a screening mammogram, she explains what is happening in clear terms, walks patients through the biopsy process and coordinates scheduling. She is also present on biopsy day, providing a familiar, steady presence that helps ensure continuity of care.

“I treat every patient like they’re family,” Katie said. “I think about how I would want someone to talk to my family or me, especially in a moment like that.”

Patients feel it. In fact, Katie has been recognized by patients she’s cared for four times as a Guardian Angel. This special program allows grateful patients to acknowledge their care team and express appreciation.

“I don’t know where to begin,” one patient shared while recognizing Katie. “Katie made me feel like family. During my biopsy and appointments, she was caring, personable and loving. I felt like she was part of my family.”

Katie focuses on easing patients' anxiety by reminding them there is a plan and with other small, personal touches. During procedures, she offers quiet reassurance. She takes notes about patients’ lives so she can follow up on what matters to them. Something simple, like asking about the patient’s grandkids or a trip they mentioned, helps them know she is invested in their care and makes them feel seen.

Delivering difficult news with compassion

Aspects of Katie’s role are challenging and delicate. Katie is often the one making calls with biopsy results, including cancer diagnoses.

“I try to be honest and also remind them that we have a plan,” Katie said. “Breast cancer has come a long way, and we have a strong team supporting their care.”

Katie’s empathy and delivery have made an impact on patients.

“When that biopsy came back as cancerous, Katie made sure to call me Friday evening, so I didn’t see it in my chart over the weekend,” another patient shared in a Guardian Angel recognition. “She listened to me, let me process and helped me through it. I will forever be grateful for that phone call.”

For Katie, those moments stay with her, too.

“When someone tells you they couldn’t have gotten through it without you, that sticks with you,” Katie said. “That’s when you know you’re making a difference.”

A lifelong calling

Her path into nursing was not driven by one big moment. It just always felt right. As a child, Katie loved playing nurse, and in high school, she worked as a CNA at a senior living facility.

“I’ve just always known,” said Katie. “And the best part about nursing is that there are so many different ways you can help people. You find where you fit.”

At Ascension Wisconsin, Katie is living out her calling, supporting patients with care that feels personal, steady and, as many describe it, like family.
